Dialog on The Tortoise and the Hare
Host: Mr. Krishna Kumar Sharma â Guide, English Teacher, Founder and Mentor, Manchester English Academy
Guest: Mr. Yasir Arafat
Mr. Krishna: Good evening, Mr. Yasir Arafat. Welcome to our session.
Mr. Yasir Arafat: Good evening, Mr. Krishna. Thank you very much. It is a pleasure to meet you again today.
Mr. Krishna: The pleasure is mine. It is always wonderful to have you in our session. Today, we would like to talk about one of the most famous Aesopâs fables â The Tortoise and the Hare. It is a story that almost everyone hears during childhood. Since when have you known this story?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: I first heard about this story when I was in primary school. Basically, the story was included in one of our English lessons in the textbook. Since then, I have been familiar with this story and its moral lesson.
Mr. Krishna: Excellent. Childhood stories often leave a deep impression on our minds. What attracts you most about this story?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: I think the most interesting part of the story is the contrast between the tortoise and the hare. The hare is extremely fast and talented, but he becomes arrogant because of his speed. On the other hand, the tortoise is slow, calm, and determined. Although the hare underestimates the tortoise, the tortoise eventually wins the race through patience and consistency. That lesson makes the story very powerful and memorable.
Mr. Krishna: Absolutely right. Sometimes talent alone is not enough; discipline and consistency are more important. In your opinion, why is this story so engaging and meaningful for people of all ages?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: This story is engaging because it teaches an important life lesson in a very simple way. It tells us that no matter how talented or powerful we are, we should never become overconfident or boastful. Overconfidence can lead to failure. At the same time, the story teaches us that steady effort and determination can help a person achieve success even if they are not naturally gifted.
Mr. Krishna: Very well explained. Why do you think the hare always mocked the tortoise?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: The hare mocked the tortoise because he believed he was far superior in speed and ability. He thought the tortoise could never defeat him in a race. Because of this pride, the hare laughed at the tortoise and underestimated him. Unfortunately, his arrogance eventually became the reason for his defeat.
Mr. Krishna: Exactly. Many people fail not because they lack ability, but because they become careless due to overconfidence. So, what lesson can you personally apply from this story in your own life?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: This story teaches me to remain humble regardless of my abilities or achievements. Even if someone has great talent, they should stay grounded and respectful toward others. The story also reminds me that patience, hard work, and consistency are essential for achieving long-term goals.
Mr. Krishna: Excellent perspective. Why do you think the hare was so confident from the beginning?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: The hare was confident because he knew he was much faster than the tortoise. He believed his natural speed guaranteed victory. Moreover, he enjoyed showing off his abilities and impressing other animals in the forest. Unfortunately, his excessive confidence made him careless during the race.
Mr. Krishna: Very true. Excessive confidence often creates weakness. Now let me ask you something interesting. If you were in the hareâs position, what would you do differently?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: If I were in the hareâs position, I would not insult or underestimate the tortoise. Instead, I would respect my opponent and remain focused on the race. I would try to stay disciplined and avoid arrogance because success requires both talent and responsibility.
Mr. Krishna: That is a very mature answer. Respecting others is extremely important. Suppose someone feels weak, slow, or less talented in life. Based on this story, what advice would you give to that person?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: I would advise that person never to lose hope. Everyone has different abilities and strengths given by God. A person should focus on continuous improvement instead of comparing themselves with others. Even slow progress can lead to great success if someone remains patient, hardworking, and consistent.
Mr. Krishna: Wonderful advice. Have you ever faced a situation where you had to stay patient and consistent to achieve something important?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: Although I have not faced a situation exactly like the story, there have been times when I felt discouraged or less confident than others. However, I always tried to stay focused on my goals instead of giving up. I believe consistency and determination are more important than temporary talent.
Mr. Krishna: Absolutely correct. Consistency defeats inconsistency every single time. Now tell me, if you had to rate this story as a source of motivation, how would you describe it?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: I would rate this story very highly as a motivational story because it teaches people not to lose confidence in themselves. Even if someone has limitations, they can still achieve success through dedication and perseverance. The story motivates us to continue working hard instead of becoming frustrated or hopeless.
Mr. Krishna: Excellent explanation. This story truly teaches us that slow and steady effort can eventually defeat arrogance and carelessness. Before we finish todayâs session, would you like to share any final message with our learners?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: Yes. I would like to say that everyone should remain humble, hardworking, and patient in life. We should never underestimate others or overestimate ourselves. Success comes to those who remain disciplined, consistent, and focused on their goals.
Mr. Krishna: That is a beautiful message. Thank you very much, Mr. Yasir Arafat, for sharing your valuable thoughts with us today.
Mr. Yasir Arafat: Thank you very much, Mr. Krishna. It was truly a pleasure speaking with you.
Mr. Krishna: The pleasure was ours. We wish you all the best in your English-learning journey and future success.
