Today, we are going to talk about different types of food and their positive and negative impacts on our health. Since you are a medical professional, I believe you can provide valuable insights into this important topic.

Dr. Roky:
Good evening, Mr. Krishna.
Thank you very much for inviting me. I am doing quite well today and feeling energetic. It is a pleasure to be here.
Mr. Krishna:
Wonderful. It is great to hear that.
You know, food is something that connects all human beings. Some people say, “We eat to live,” while others seem to “live to eat.” Food is not only a necessity but also a source of happiness and comfort.
As a Bengali and a doctor, I am curious to know about your favorite food. Could you please tell us what foods you enjoy the most?
Dr. Roky:
Certainly.
My favorite foods are fried rice, beef curry, and mashed dry fish prepared with various spices and seasonings.
Mr. Krishna:
That sounds delicious.
Could you explain why these foods are your favorites?
Dr. Roky:
Of course.
First of all, I love fried rice for two main reasons.
The first reason is its wonderful taste. The second reason is convenience. Fried rice is available almost everywhere in Bangladesh, and it is relatively easy to prepare. Whenever I am busy and do not have enough time to cook, I can easily order fried rice and enjoy a satisfying meal within a short period.
Secondly, I enjoy beef curry because of its rich flavor and unique taste. Although I know it should be consumed in moderation, I still enjoy it occasionally.
My third favorite food is mashed dry fish prepared with traditional Bangladeshi spices. This dish is very special to me because it represents our culture and tradition. While it is not commonly available in every restaurant, my mother prepares it exceptionally well. Her version is incredibly delicious, and I enjoy eating it with plain rice.
Mr. Krishna:
That is fascinating.
Traditional Bangladeshi food is certainly famous for its strong flavors. However, many of our dishes are extremely spicy, oily, or sweet.
As a doctor, what is your observation regarding the eating habits of Bangladeshi people?
Dr. Roky:
Thank you for asking such an important question.
One thing I often tell my patients is that tasty food is not always healthy food.
One of my teachers used to say,
“The more delicious a food is, the more harmful it may become if consumed excessively.”
Of course, there are exceptions such as fruits, which are naturally nutritious and beneficial.
Unfortunately, many people in Bangladesh prioritize taste over nutrition. Foods often contain excessive amounts of sugar, oil, salt, and spices.
For example, excessive sugar consumption significantly increases the risk of diabetes.
Similarly, consuming large amounts of refined carbohydrates can contribute to obesity and metabolic disorders.
Mr. Krishna:
That is quite concerning.
What about spicy food?
Many Bangladeshis cannot imagine a meal without plenty of chili and spices.
Dr. Roky:
That is true.
Excessively spicy food can irritate the stomach lining.
A large number of Bangladeshi people suffer from gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. While spicy food is not the only cause, it can worsen existing digestive problems.
When people repeatedly consume extremely spicy foods, the protective lining of the stomach may become irritated, increasing the risk of digestive complications.
Therefore, moderation is very important.
Mr. Krishna:
That makes perfect sense.
Nowadays, people are also worried about food adulteration and the excessive use of chemicals in agriculture.
What is your opinion on this issue?
Dr. Roky:
This is one of the biggest public health concerns in our country.
Modern agriculture often relies heavily on chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and other artificial substances to increase production.
Unfortunately, excessive use of these chemicals can introduce harmful substances into our food chain.
Some agricultural products may contain heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and chromium. Long-term exposure to these substances can damage vital organs and may even increase the risk of certain cancers.
Mr. Krishna:
That sounds alarming.
Many people are also concerned about cooking oils.
Could you tell us more about that?
Dr. Roky:
Certainly.
One major concern is the widespread use of low-quality palm oil and repeatedly reused cooking oil.
Scientific studies have shown that unhealthy oils may contribute to several medical conditions, including:
- Fatty liver disease
- High cholesterol
- Elevated triglycerides
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Chronic kidney disease
Therefore, people should be careful about the type of oil they consume regularly.
Mr. Krishna:

Many people want to live healthier lives but do not know where to start.
What advice would you give them?
Dr. Roky:
I would suggest several practical steps.
First, reduce the consumption of fast food and highly processed food.
Second, increase the intake of fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and clean protein sources.
Third, drink sufficient water every day.
Fourth, avoid excessive sugar, salt, and oil.
Fifth, read food labels and check expiry dates before purchasing packaged products.
Finally, maintain regular physical activity because healthy eating and exercise go hand in hand.
Mr. Krishna:
Excellent advice.
What about food safety awareness?
Dr. Roky:
Awareness is essential.
Consumers should learn about food sources, manufacturing standards, and nutritional information.
Parents should educate children about healthy eating habits from an early age.
Governments, educational institutions, healthcare professionals, and media organizations all have important roles to play in spreading awareness.
Mr. Krishna:
Absolutely.

My message is simple:
“Health is wealth.”
People often focus on earning money while neglecting their health. However, without good health, it becomes difficult to enjoy success, happiness, or even daily life.
