IELTS Full mock test on Topic Hometown & City Life
This is already a strong performance, roughly around Band 6.5–7.0, because Yasir demonstrates:
✅ Good fluency
✅ Ability to develop answers
✅ Good topic vocabulary
✅ Some advanced structures
✅ Attempts at complex grammar
✅ Good confidence
However, it is not yet Band 9 because of:
❌ Repetition (“city”, “different types of”, “I think”)
❌ Grammar errors
❌ Awkward collocations
❌ Unnatural phrasing
❌ Overuse of fillers
❌ Some ideas are not fully developed
❌ Lack of idiomatic/native-like expressions
🎤 BAND 9 VERSION
Candidate: Mr. Yasir Arafat
Examiner: Krishna Kumar Sharma

PART 1
HOMETOWN
Where is your hometown located?
Band 9 Answer
I come from Habiganj, which is a district in the Sylhet Division in northeastern Bangladesh. Although I moved away at a relatively young age, I still have many fond memories of growing up there. It’s a peaceful and close-knit town surrounded by natural beauty, and it holds a special place in my heart because of my childhood experiences and family connections.
Has your hometown changed much since your childhood?
Absolutely.
When I was younger, Habiganj was much quieter and less developed than it is today. Public transportation was limited, and many roads were not properly maintained. However, over the years, the town has undergone a remarkable transformation. New educational institutions, healthcare facilities, shopping centres, and improved transport networks have been introduced. As a result, residents now enjoy a much higher standard of living than they did in the past.
Are there good transportation links in your hometown?
Yes, certainly.
The town is fairly well connected through an extensive network of roads and highways. Residents can easily travel using buses, auto-rickshaws, and other forms of local transport. In addition, recent infrastructure developments have significantly reduced travel time within the area. Overall, getting around the town is both convenient and affordable.
What can foreigners do in your hometown?
Foreign visitors would be spoiled for choice.
Since Habiganj is located near some of Sylhet’s most scenic regions, tourists can explore tea gardens, rolling hills, waterfalls, and picturesque lakes. They can also experience local culture, traditional cuisine, and the warm hospitality of the people. It’s an ideal destination for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of large cities and enjoy nature.
Do you plan to stay there in the future?
I’m actually in two minds about that.
On the one hand, I feel a strong emotional attachment to my hometown because it is where I spent much of my childhood. On the other hand, major cities such as Dhaka offer better career opportunities and modern facilities. At the moment, I prefer living in the capital for professional reasons. However, I can certainly see myself returning to Habiganj later in life to enjoy a quieter and more peaceful lifestyle.
FOLLOW-UP QUESTION
What makes you feel emotional about your hometown?
The strongest connection comes from my childhood memories.
I spent countless hours exploring the town with my grandparents and family members. Unfortunately, my grandparents are no longer with us, so whenever I revisit those places, it brings back a mixture of happiness and nostalgia. Moreover, seeing how the town has evolved over time reminds me of how much my own life has changed as well.
PART 2
Describe a Recent Change in Your Hometown
Band 9 Model Answer
I’d like to talk about a significant transformation that has taken place in my hometown, Habiganj.
Over the last decade, the town has undergone substantial infrastructural development. The local authorities launched several projects aimed at modernising the area, including the construction of new roads, bridges, parks, and public facilities.
One of the most noticeable improvements has been the transportation system. New roads have made travel much more efficient, while the introduction of additional public transport services has greatly improved mobility for residents.
These developments have had a positive impact on the local community. People can now commute more easily, access essential services more conveniently, and enjoy a higher quality of life. Furthermore, improved infrastructure has encouraged business growth and attracted more visitors to the area.
Personally, I believe these changes have been extremely beneficial. Not only have they enhanced the appearance of the town, but they have also created new opportunities for economic and social development. If this progress continues, I believe Habiganj could become one of the most attractive regional towns in Bangladesh in the coming years.
PART 3
Why do people migrate from rural areas to cities?
The primary reason is the pursuit of better opportunities.
Large cities tend to offer a wider range of employment options, higher-quality education, and more advanced healthcare services. For example, many young people move to urban areas to attend prestigious universities or secure well-paying jobs. As a result, cities continue to attract people who are seeking a better future for themselves and their families.
What are the disadvantages of living in a metropolis?
While metropolitan areas offer numerous advantages, they also present several challenges.
One major drawback is pollution. Heavy traffic, industrial activity, and dense populations contribute significantly to air and noise pollution, which can have serious health consequences.
Another issue is the fast-paced lifestyle. Many city dwellers work long hours and experience high levels of stress, which can negatively affect both their physical and mental well-being.
Additionally, green spaces are often replaced by high-rise buildings, creating what many people describe as a “concrete jungle.” Consequently, residents may have fewer opportunities to relax and connect with nature.
How might cities change in the future?
I believe future cities will become increasingly technology-driven.
Artificial intelligence, automation, and smart infrastructure are likely to play a major role in everyday life. For instance, we may see autonomous vehicles, intelligent traffic systems, and energy-efficient buildings becoming commonplace.
However, these advancements may also create challenges. Certain jobs could disappear due to automation, potentially leading to unemployment in some sectors. Therefore, governments will need to strike a balance between technological innovation and workforce development.
Overall, I expect future cities to be more efficient, sustainable, and connected, although they will also face new social and economic challenges.
