Discussion on Aesop’s Fable: The Lion and the Mouse
Mr. Krishna: Today, let us talk about one of the most famous Aesop’s Fables — The Lion and the Mouse.
Can you tell me when you first learned this story?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: Certainly. I first learned this story when I was in primary school. I believe it was included in our English textbook. I really enjoyed reading it because our teacher explained the moral of the story beautifully and connected it with real-life situations.
Mr. Krishna: That sounds wonderful. Now, could you please summarize the story for us?
Story Summary
Mr. Yasir Arafat:
One day, a lion was sleeping peacefully in the forest. Suddenly, a little mouse accidentally ran across the lion’s body. The lion became very angry and caught the mouse.
The tiny mouse became frightened and begged the lion to forgive him. The mouse also promised that one day he might help the lion in return.
At first, the lion laughed because he thought such a tiny creature could never help a powerful animal like him. However, the lion eventually felt pity for the mouse and decided to let him go.
A few days later, the lion was trapped in a hunter’s net. Even though the lion was very strong, he could not free himself from the trap.
Fortunately, the mouse heard the lion’s roar and quickly came to help him. The mouse used his sharp teeth to cut the net little by little, and finally the lion escaped safely.
After that, the lion realized that even a small creature could be very helpful in difficult situations. He became extremely grateful to the mouse.
Real-Life Lesson
Mr. Krishna: Excellent explanation. Now tell me, what lesson do you learn from this story in real life?
Mr. Yasir Arafat:
I think this story teaches us a very valuable moral lesson. We should never underestimate anyone because even a small or seemingly insignificant person may help us someday.
Sometimes people may appear weak, poor, or unimportant, but they can possess valuable qualities such as intelligence, honesty, kindness, or problem-solving abilities.
Mr. Krishna: Absolutely correct. Many people judge others based on appearance, wealth, or status, which is not right.
Mr. Yasir Arafat: Yes, exactly. In real life, we often ignore or neglect people whom we think are less capable. However, life can surprise us at any moment.
Personal Experience
Mr. Krishna: Have you ever faced a similar situation in your own life?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: Yes, I have.
Back in my university days, I worked on a group project. At first, I underestimated one of my group members because he seemed quiet and less active.
I thought he would not contribute much to the project. However, toward the end of the semester, that same person turned out to be the most helpful member of our group.
He solved a major problem in the project that none of us could solve. I was truly surprised by his capability and intelligence.
That experience taught me never to underestimate anyone.
Mr. Krishna: That is a fantastic real-life example. Experiences like this truly change our perspective.
Friendship and Trust
Mr. Krishna: Do you think choosing an honest and reliable friend is difficult nowadays?
Mr. Yasir Arafat: Yes, I think it is extremely difficult nowadays.
When we first meet someone, we usually do not know their true character. Some people may appear friendly at first, but later they may disappoint us.
Therefore, we should be very careful while choosing friends.
Mr. Krishna: Exactly. Trust takes time to build.
Mr. Yasir Arafat: Yes. A real friend is someone who supports us during difficult times, not only during good times.
Current Society and Human Relationships
Mr. Krishna: What do you think about the current situation in society regarding helping people?
Mr. Yasir Arafat:
In today’s world, many people are extremely busy and self-centered. It has become difficult to find honest, trustworthy, and reliable people.
Some individuals try to deceive others for personal benefit. As a result, genuine relationships are becoming rare nowadays.
If I were in the lion’s situation today, perhaps it would be very difficult for me to find someone as loyal and helpful as the mouse.
Mr. Krishna: Very thoughtful answer. Society has definitely changed a lot.
Moral of the Story
Mr. Krishna: So finally, what is the moral of the story?
Mr. Yasir Arafat:
The moral of the story is that we should never underestimate anyone, no matter how small, weak, poor, or insignificant they may appear.
Everyone has unique abilities and qualities. Even the smallest person can help us during difficult times.
The story also teaches us kindness, humility, gratitude, and the importance of helping others.
Why Was the Lion Surprised?
Mr. Krishna: Why do you think the lion became surprised at the end?
Mr. Yasir Arafat:
The lion became surprised because he never imagined that such a tiny creature could save his life.
When the mouse first promised to help him in the future, the lion laughed at the idea. However, later the mouse actually rescued him from danger.
This unexpected event changed the lion’s attitude completely.
Writing Similar Stories
Mr. Krishna: If you got the chance to write a story like this, what would you do?
Mr. Yasir Arafat:
If I wrote a story like this, I would try to spread positive values such as kindness, cooperation, honesty, and humanity.
I believe stories with strong moral lessons can inspire people and help society become more compassionate and understanding.
Ending
Mr. Krishna: Excellent discussion today, Mr. Yasir. You explained the story beautifully and connected it wonderfully with real life.
Mr. Yasir Arafat: Thank you so much, Mr. Krishna. I really enjoyed today’s conversation.
Mr. Krishna: It was a pleasure speaking with you. Keep practicing English regularly.
Mr. Yasir Arafat: Certainly. Thank you very much.
Mr. Krishna: You are most welcome. Have a wonderful day.
Mr. Yasir Arafat: You too. Goodbye.
Mr. Krishna: Goodbye.
